Nagercoil

Nagercoil (also spelt Nagarkovil) is the southernmost city of India situated in the Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu. The name Nagercoil was derived from the Nagaraja temple located here.


It is the district administrative center and holds a number of educational institutions, hospitals, offices and industries. It is also the hub of industrial and commercial activity in the district, and a fertile agricultural area that produces cotton and rice. The minerals ilmenite and monazite are mined there. The land is surrounded by hills and lush green paddy fields. It is also known for different varieties of bananas. Nagercoil is a land of great traditional and cultural significance. Hindu and Christian cultures meet here.


Nagercoil is 19 km from Kanyakumari and is on the way to Padmanabhapuram Palace. It is well connected by bus routes to all the places in Tamil Nadu and with inter-state bus services to Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Bangalore. Nagercoil is also connected by rail to different places. Nagarcoil Junction Railway Station is situated in the city center. Nagercoil Town Railway Station is situated in Palivilai. The nearest airport is the Trivandrum International Airport, 75 km away.
